The following is an extract from a normal daily Trunk Utilization Report. The term "ROUTE" is synonymous with "TRUNK GROUP" and simply refers to a collection of individual trunks. The report is based upon an analysis of a full day's call detail records collected from midnight to midnight. The number of calls handled by each individual trunk is disclosed for the day/date. The running totals are disclosed in the P-T-D section.
The Route Number/code is dictated by the switch (ie: included in the data stream). For those sites where the switch does not provide the route number, the software categorizes the calls as to INCOMING or OUTGOING and creates an artificial code of 001 or 002 respectively. Trunk numbers are generally three digit codes also included in the data stream from the PBX/switch. NEAX sites may have many Route codes with the descriptions of the codes varying from site to site.
The major use of this report is to provide management information about the "trunking" on the telephone system. You can easily see if you are 'over-trunked' within a group if the daily call counts for certain trunks is consistently low. You can see if individual trunks are 'out of service' if the call count is randomly low. You can determine whether or not the switch is evenly distributing calls over the trunks within the group. Other patterns can be derived from this report.
